Duality is at the heart of Dsquared2. Twin founders and creative directors Dean and Dan Caten have always positioned their story of brotherhood and double identity at the heart of their creative practice.
This idea of twoness is also inextricably woven into the Catens’ design DNA, expressing multifaceted individuality through a dramatic clash – or synthesis – of opposites: self and other, inner and outer, low and high, day and night.
The Fall/Winter 2024 collection and its alchemical runway show pushed this theme of duality and transformation to imaginative new heights, drawing on a cast of identical twins to create an ingenious illusion of a layered daytime look transforming instantly into an elegant nighttime look.
Now, this practice of fluid style and self reinvention is seen with a fresh focus in the collection’s campaign. The spirit of sibling connection is extended as well through the casting, which stars Abby Champion and her brother Luke Champion.
In a bright portrait before a crisp white backdrop, Abby wears a voluminous bomber jacket with oversized utilitarian detailing over a sinuous wrap top and marbled denim jeans. A maximally fringed bag and earthy leather accessories round out the look with a rich and dynamic material interplay. This look is then boldly contrasted with another: a form-fitting black dress with one full sleeve complemented by sculptural gold jewelry and pumps with straps that coil sensually up the leg.
The studio space, once bright, is now swathed in dramatic shadows, echoing the cinematic transition from day to night.
The portraits of Luke take the same approach of bold contrast with a distinct and multifaceted personal style. In the first look, a layered sherpa-lined jacket and suede vest channel Dsquared2’s penchant for western wear and its spirit of individual freedom and adventure, while the nighttime look pares things back with a sharp yet fluid take on suiting.
Taken on their own, each image offers a clear look at an expressive style moment. When considered as a whole, however, the campaign transcends the sum of its parts and stands as a manifold ode to the joy of constant reinvention.
Not only does Dsquared2 continue to push and find new ways of declaring its core ethos of personal liberation and expressive individualism across each season, but it shows how this transformation can take place across a single day, a single moment.
We all contain multitudes; personal style is a process of discovering, refining, and celebrating each of them.
Stripping this truth down to its core elements, Dsquared2 Fall/Winter 2024 is another bold expression of layered individuality.
