FALL 2024 – “FREE YOUR MIND”
Celebrating the Free Spirit from Amsterdam to San Francisco. Our journey starts in Amsterdam, the birthplace of liberal thinking. We partnered with the Embassy of The Free Mind which is located accross the canal from our design studio. The Embassy of the Free Mind is an institute and library, inseparably linked with Amsterdam and itshistory of tolerance and freedom of expression. This collection features images and texts which tell centuries-old stories created by free thinkers. Through various artworks and details, we celebrate the free spirit mindset of San Francisco which became the emblematic city of free spirit in America thanks to the writers of the beat generation.
TREE OF KNOWLEDGE
Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica Collection
This image is based on an engraving from 1698 from a book by Valentin Weigel entitled Studium universale. The message of this book and its illustration is that simply plucking the fruits of the Tree of Knowledge only amounts to a ‘studium particulare’, a study that can only yield pieces of the puzzle of life. The real goal, however, should be to engage in a ‘studium universale’, a comprehensive knowledge that leads to peace and understanding. Its symbol is the inner eye of wisdom gazing at us from the place where the three circles converge. The hand from the cloud above is not the hand of God, as Weigel explains. It is the hand of a seeker after truth, who already possesses a more encompassing view of things.
HEAD
Robert Fludd (1574 – 1637)
The head of this young man is in fact a diagram of the human mind. Not only does it indicate the seats of the five senses – Tactus, touch (index finger); Gustus, taste (mouth); Odoratus, smelling (nose), Visus, sight (eye) and Auditus, hearing (ear), but also the way through which God can communicate with man and vice versa. This can be achieved using the faculties of reason (Ratio), intellect (Intellectus) and mind (Mens). Above these three faculties we see a ‘communication channel’ that allows man to access the world of God and the angels. HAND OF THE PHILOSOPHER
The Hand of the Philosophers features symbols that stand for (al)chemical substances: crown=salpeter, star=vitriol, sun=salammoniac, antarn=alum, key=salt, fish=mercury, fire=sulphur.Those who did not understand the meaning of these secret symbols could never become true alchemists.
